I helped Spencer record a demo of this song years ago that I hated. There was just something terrible about the version we did, and we tried doing it again and again but just ended up never finishing it. It stayed tabled for years until we completely forgot about it, which was fine with me. While Work Friend was writing the album, I went to a rehearsal, and they pulled out this updated version of "Any Good" and I loved it. It was the first time the song did anything for me, and it was because I could tell how much fun they were having playing it. It took the whole band to make the song work. I think as soon as they wrote the song we were set on making it the first track on the album. It was a goal to capture that "four guys in a room having fun playing music" energy in the recording of "Any Good," and that vibe stayed for the rest of the tracks too.
I recommend listening to this song while you drink the first beer you'll drink around a bunch of friends."
